BLOG SHARING: from ENGLISH MUSE-"My Modern Vintage Decor Obsession"-

In "BLOG SHARING," I would like to pick up & introduce inspirational posts by global bloggers I find in my blog-surfing tossed with my own outlooks on the topics.  Here is my first pick up: "My Modern Vintage Decor Obsession" a post by Tina Daunt's ENGLISH MUSE.  Tina picked up the pictures from as the "perfect example of 'Modern Vintage' (the word  referred to Emily Chalmers' "Modern Vintage Style")" which I totally agree with.  A definition of "Modern Vintage" I think is, yes surely, it is a mixture-styling of vintage(old) and modern(new), but when it comes to Emily's making it I see the colors of the props she picks holds up strong vibration, ant that is an necessary essence in her decorating.  Tina's pick-up of the pictures looks right to me in toning of pieces of vivid colors embraced by chic, shabby textured furniture groups.  What a pretty surprise-gift of Colors!

前にバスルームの床を一度白で厚くペイントしたことがあったけどブリーチ剤で簡単に色を落とすことが出来たわ。」

鉄パイプはホームセンターで入手可能だし、DIYで自作してみるのもいいかも。

こちらの『BLOG SHARING-ブログ・シェアリング』のコーナーでは、世界のブロガーの記事をピックアップしてご紹介します。

初回はTina Dauntの『English Muse』から、"My Modern Vintage Decor Obsession"という記事。ブログのタイトルからイギリスの方という印象を最初に持ちましたが、実際にはアメリカ・ロスアンジェルスのWebニュースサイトで政治コラムを担当するエディターのフランス系アメリカ人女性。ブログには他に「BOOKS」「TRAVEL」「STYLE」といったカテゴリがあり、ジャーナリストらしい切り口で歴史資料写真を集めたサイトの紹介（パリのベルエポックという時代についての記事にて）や、ジャックリーン・ケネディ・オナシスが好んで読んでいたと言われるJean Rhys という小説家が描く女性像についての考証など、いずれも知識欲を満たしてくれる記事ばかりです。

そんな中で今回ご紹介している「DECOR」というカテゴリには、すっかり肩の力を抜いた、彼女自身の素直な楽しみとインテリア趣向が伺える記事があげられています。タイトルの"My Modern Vintage Decor Obsession"　は「＝私のはまってるモダン・ヴィンテージ・デコ」という意味で、ロンドンの人気インテリア・スタイリストであるEmily Chalmersの本のタイトル『Modern Vintage Style-モダン・ヴィンテージ・スタイル-』を引用した個人的なピンアップ記事。写真は、1st Option というロンドンの撮影（ロケ）場所を提供するエージェンシーのサイトからTinaがピックアップしたもの。
Emily Chalmers についてもう少し書くと、彼女は他にも「Flea Market Style-フリーマーケット・スタイル-」や「Cheap Chic-チープ・シック-」など、明確な意図を込めたインテリア・スタイリングをそのまま著作本のタイトルに掲げ、そしてそれらを新しいスタイルの用語として業界に認知させてしまうカリスマ的存在。そんなEmilyの『Modern Vintage Decor-モダン・ヴィンテージ・デコ-』のまさにサンプルの様な写真をみつけた！という訳ですが、確かに可愛い。

単なる「ヴィンテージ（古き）＆モダン（新しき）のミックス」ではない。Emily がいつもそうする様に、大胆で自信たっぷりに選ばれた小物のカラーからはバイブレーション（＝振動）が出ている様にさえ感じます。そしてその一方で、優しい「古道具」の持つ質感に抱かれておすまししているものだから、まるで「サプライズ・プレゼント」を手にした瞬間の様な、驚きを受け取るのでした。

"Sense of Wonder" in Chizuko Nishike's works -studio visit-

Whether it is a white walled gallery room, the surface of framed board, or just in a tiny little box, Chizuko Nishike transforms the space into timeless wonderland where you are invited to walk through to re-discover your own “sense of wonder” (Carson, 1956)*.  Once you step into her space, the fairy beings of her ceramic creation; deer, white polar bear, rabbit and panda, start talking to you silently with familiar smiles bringing back the mutual memories of playing together in imaginary world of childhood. “Many people tell me,” Chizuko said, “they feel very relaxed and become sleepy looking at my objects.” I told her I was just trying to stop my own yawning at that very moment!  It is interesting how I forget that I have come to see works of arts. Her style of exhibition is always very so friendly.  The space even holds a sort of healing effects similar to which soothing nightcap drinks or dreamy bed time stories may bring us.  Hope you can feel it from the pictures I took.

Chizuko  is a ceramic objects artist as so she describes herself.  Brought up closely with her grandmother who was always making something by her own hands, Chizuko too very naturally started to make things of her own at young age.  Sawing, cooking, and knitting for her everyday joy and for simple living nurtured the foundation of her style of craftsmanship.

As a little girl she loved reading European fairy tale stories of princess and prince depicted with mysterious woods and castles as their surroundings. The phase of fairy world journey may have whispered secrets to her mind so that she could keep accompanying her fairy-mates close even after she grows up. In her private studio, I asked Chizuko my last question of interview: “What is your most favorite fairy tale story?” She smiled and answered, “Sleeping Beauty.”

Carson, L., Rachel (1907-1964).USA
Originally written as an essay for Woman’s Home Companion (1956) magazine titled as ”Helping your child to wonder,” Carson proposed that we were born intuitive to  discover and communicate with magic and beauty in nature.  According to Carson “the lasting pleasures of contact with the natural world are not reserved for scientists but are available to anyone who will place himself under the influence of earth, sea, and sky, and their amazing life.”  She also notes that “if a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement, and mystery of the world we live in.”

-西家智津子さんの作品にみつけた『センス・オブ・ワンダー』-

その場所はときには白いギャラリーの部屋だったり、フレームで囲まれた一片のボードだったり、小さな箱の中だったりするけど、どんな場所であっても西家さんは時間の感覚さえどこかへ消えてしまう様な不思議な世界を創り出す。その空間にひとたび入ると、私たちの中に備わった「センス・オブ・ワンダー」（注）が一瞬でオンになる。そして、そこに存在する陶の生き物たちが、子供の頃に想像の世界で一緒にあそんだことがある様な、そんな普遍的な記憶を言葉を使わずに静かに思い出させてくれるのを感じ始める。「作品をご覧になる方々がよくおっしゃるのです。なんだか眠くなってくるって。」と西家さんは言う。実際アトリエを訪れた私はまさにあくびが出そうになって必死に抑えようとしていたところだった。もしかしたら、西家さんの作品にはある種のヒーリング効果があるのではないかと思う。たとえば夜眠る前にいただく、心をほっと落ち着かせる一杯のドリンクだったり、ベッドのかたわらで読んでもらう絵本の読み聞かせに耳を傾けて夢の中に入るあの時間だったり。そんな感覚に近いものがすっと入ってくるのだ。
西家さんは「陶オブジェ作家」としてご自身を表現されている。子供の頃はおばあさんがその傍らで何かしらを手作りしていて、西家さん自身もごく自然に、自分自身の手でものを作ることを始めた。ソーイングだったり料理だったり編み物だったり、毎日を慈しみながら愉みながら、「つくるひと」となっていった。西洋のおとぎ話が大好きでたくさんの本を読んだという。神秘的な森やお城に住むお姫様や王子様に何かとても深い親しみを感じながら。そんな不思議なおとぎの国への旅の時間の中で、少女だった西家さんは大人になっても絵本の中で出逢った仲間たちと一緒にいられる秘密の方法をそっと預かったのではないかしらと思った。「一番好きなおとぎ話は何ですか？」と最後に尋ねてみると、間を置かずに西家さんは答えてくれた。「『ねむり姫』ですね」。

（注）レイチェル・カーソンの著作『センス・オブ・ワンダー』について

海洋生物学者として、作家として、また環境活動家として生きたレイチェル・カーソンが1956年に婦人雑誌に投稿したエッセイ「Healing Your Child to Wonder」が原文。人は生まれながらに自然の中の不思議や美を感じ取る直観（＝Sense of  Wonder）を授かっていることを説いた。また、そんな感性は子供の頃に自然との関わりを積極的に体験することで磨かれること、大人が一緒にその時間を愉しむことでより深く育成されることを提唱した。
